Dear Ellie, Paul, Fabian, Su and Andre,
It was really good to meet you all in Bradford, and I'm really excited about
getting this library project going.
I've not managed to get the initial software set up properly yet, but I thought
it would be good to get this list thing kicked off - also because I lost my
notes from the day and hoped other people would remember more of what we
talked about.
you can subscribe to the mailing list here:
http://lists.theps.net/mailman/listinfo/dlpdev
you can send mail to the list by emailing:
dlpdev@theps.net
the list is not moderated, but you can only post to it if you've joined it.
The software already does basic stuff - add books, describe collections,
reviews, checkout/check in books, e-borrower cards ;), etc.
Here's what I remember from our conversation (- I mean practically - what I
remember us talking about being useful.. the conversation was much more
interesting!)
- a 'build a bibliography' feature - for linking together books and
collections of books. Did you call them 'knowledge paths' Paul? I liked that.
- shared or individual libraries (this is my collection, at my house, this is
our collection at our social centre).
- self-defined categories for books (you can make your own, or share someone
else's)
- copyleft agreement for the metadata that dlp librarians create.
- a keyword system (search for books with... keywords etc..)
I'm sure there were some other gem-like ideas. Did anyone else take notes?
is this enough to start with?
I'll let you all know as soon as the library software is up and running to
the point where it won't be a waste of time putting information into it.
Cheers,
Saul
