hi everyone,
sorry I've been so quiet and haven't come up with the goods with that library
software yet - it's coming (I know I said it would be done ages ago...)
Still, it'll definitely be working to a point by by the second week in October
where we can start putting our books in and not have to worry that it'll be
obsolete.
there's a test page here: http://dlp.theps.net but I'm afraid it's californicated at t
he moment because Moxie, the guy who I'm helping develop the software with is
teh first one to get a library node up and running - in the Bay area, so don't
worry about all that 'creating community' malarkey, once I've got my thesis out
the way and some bills paid we can have our own graphic design, wording, links
etc..
If you've got any comments and ideas, please feel free to make them on this
list, but I'm afraid I won't be able to respond before next Tuesday when I'll
be finished with the deadline. If you have any ideas and would like to record
them, there's a wiki (a website anyone can edit) here: http://dlpdev.theps.net.
Make any changes you see fit - there's not much up there yet.
oh, and I saw something interesting today, apparently the Dewey Decimal system
is trademarked (I had no idea) and the corporation that owns it 'The Online
Computer Library Centre' are suing a hotel for using it - for three times their
annual profits since they opened. Nice.
thread here:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/21/143231&mode=thread&tid=99
with some interesting Slashdot-style ruminations on better classification
systems.
In fact, this is what Fabian and I were talking about the other night - we
definintely need to give classification systems a boot in the arse. Oi, fabian,
what was that idea you came up with? I hadn't eaten and was totally knackered
that night so I can't remember anything much form our meeting at larc.
X
Saul.
