ignore the login bit, try going straight for
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@thoughtcrime.org:/var/lib/cvs co dlp
which works fine for me. If you are challenged for a password, it's
'anonymous'.
let me know if you still have trouble with this!

which moxie set up - and is quite quiet but occasionally used for software
release info and development - moxie tends to watch that one more I think, and
he's the server admin for thoughtcrime.org.
