Particle
Live audio visual performance by D-Fuse in collaboration with Novak
as part of Reinventing the City
Friday 2 October
18:30 – 21:00
Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Cities exist on several different levels. Places that we know and live
in have been superseded by spaces of flows, webs of connections for
communication, exchange and control that have come to transcend the
limitations of actual physical space. Traditional ideas of territory
(spatial as well as ideological) have almost been dissolved in this
process, while new centres of power are emerging at the nodal points
that regulate the flows of global networks.
Particle alludes to this fragmented reality of everyday life,
deconstructing the urban fabric to reveal a city that exists as much
in an immaterial web of connections as it does in actual space.
Evading the allure of indiscriminate technological utopianism,
Particle also probes the faultlines and frictions that arise between
the realms of the virtual and that of lived experience. Working with
the renowned North East collective Novak for this show, D-Fuse will
incorporate the sights and sounds of Tyne & Wear into the live
performance to create a stunning and evocative new work featuring our
unique locale.
This version of Particle has been specially created for Reinventing
the City, a festival celebrating 200 years of Urban Imagination on
Tyneside: 19 Sep to 11 Oct 2009.
