Please find attached details of kickSTART1 and 2. These are talks by design
alumni of Westminster, UAL, UWE and other universities running interaction
design and related new media courses. The talks aim to help students about
to graduate realize the range and diversity of the opportunities open to
them on their path to professionalism.
KickSTART1 is at the Harrow Auditorium, University of Westminster, from
2-5pm on Thursday 14th June. KickSTART2 is at the Street Lecture Theatre,
London College of Communication, 2-5pm on Tuesday June 19th.
These talks are of interest and importance to graduating design students in
new media-related disciplines. They illustrate something of the diversity of
practice and professional development in the rapidly converging new media
sector, providing route-maps and inspiration for students about to graduate.
Do try to get your students along to these talks, they are highly
appropriate as part of a professional development programme.
Who is organising these talks?
Bob Cotton, recently a research fellow in interactive media at LCC, now a
project manager in the New Media Exchange (nmx) programme run by London
Westside - an LDA-funded initiative to encourage knowledge transfer, the
exchange of competitive intelligence, and new media entrepreneurial
development.
Who should attend?
Design students about to graduate aiming at professional practice in the
new media sector. Students from disciplines such as graphics, video and
film, web design, animation, information design, interaction design

will be illustrated talks.
Who will be speaking?
Speakers at both events include recent alumni of design from leading
universities, as well as specialists in entrepreneurial developments.
Speakers include:
Gavin OCarroll - recent alumni of LCC MA Interactive Media, University of
the Arts, London, recipient of NESTA FutureLab support funding and now
director of MakeMode. Gavin talks about his experiences of developing a new
business with a new product in a rigorous research/commercial environment.
Lynn Cordeiro - Lynn Cordeiro has seven years of commercial experience and
currently works for Nokia as a Senior User Experience Engineer. Her
application designs are now being used by over 15 million Nokia users
worldwide. She completed an MA in Design for Interaction from the University
of Westminster in London, possesses strong conceptual and communication
skills and is accomplished in project management as well as in the practical
aspects of usability, HCI and interface design.
Samantha Rugge-Price - left MA Interactive Media, LCC, University of the
Arts London last year, and with colleagues from that course will talk about
their experiences combining freelance and business development, design
projects for Sky Skyspace, and setting up their own studio.
Shawn Sobers - currently working on his PhD on Community Media at University
of the West of England, Shawn also runs several community arts projects in
collaboration with ITV West and BBC. He runs a media production organisation
called Firstborn Creatives, and will be talking about his experiences
becoming a professional designer and a social entrepreneur.
Rosy Jones - Until recently Rosy ran the Centre for Enterprise and
Innovation at Southampton University, and is vastly experienced in helping
researchers spin-out new businesses. Rosie will be talking about
entrepreneurial business routes from College and Uni Research.
Alison Coward: Enterprise for the creative arts
Alison gives an overview of her work at the Enterprise Centre for the
Creative Arts (ECCA) - the service run by UAL to encourage business
development for designers and creatives in London.
Anna Printcez:
Anna is an alumni of LCC MA Interactive Media. She runs various live
television and multimedia streaming arts event throughout Europe - all
without a formal business plan. She will be giving a portfolio talk, with
information about starting up in a brand new field
Lee Gage of Harbottle and Lewis
Protecting your Designs and IP
Lee advises on a broad range of intellectual property matters, both
contentious and non-contentious. Lee's primary focus is on brand management
and clearance, trade marks, designs, passing off and anti-counterfeiting.
Lee also has significant experience in relation to projects involving
content licensing, all aspects of e-commerce, and intellectual property
issues in interactive media.
Andrew White (On101)
Andrew is a graduate of Graphic Design BA at Central St Martins, University
of the Arts, London, starting his freelance career in the mid-1990s, just as
interactive media and the Web were taking off. Towards the end of the
decade, he established On101 and works there with his partner and wife
Louise and a coder specializing in Director and Lingo. They attract all
kinds of work including large-scale museum interactives and installations.
Andrew will be talking about making the transition from freelance to
creative director to studio practice
Ana Marie Peter and Marc Peter (On Idle)
Since graduating from the Masters in Interactive Media at LCC/UAL 3 years
ago, Marc and Ane have created a cutting edge design and development studio,
specializing in elegant design solutions configuring data and information
through xml and other data management tools, integrated in user-friendly and
typographically precise interface design. They will be talking about
setting-up On_Idle, establishing a client-base, pitching for work, and
quality-controlling their output, while delivering the solutions that their
clients need.
