re: I'm finding the idea of a load of remotely collected interviews 
using skype and a recording device very compelling for 
qualitative/publication purposes.

hmm, sounds like fun but... with limitations as part of a formal 
process...an interview is always as much (if not more) about the 
interviewer as it is about the interviewee- unless very experienced, 
expert and dispassionate, the interviewer will inevitably be in a 
position to lead moderate and mediate the interviewee.
