Hi all,
just went to post a follow up on the meet the week before last and
realised I hadn't posted about it yet.
It was great to see everyone who could make it there (7 of us showed
up) and we were still nattering at 11pm :)
We introduced ourselves and talked about what our interest in setting
up the group were. Main ones seemed to be:
- having a monthly meeting
It would be good to decide a regular slot. I can offer greenbench as a
venue.
* What dates would suit everyone?
* Does anyone know when palmy lug meet? would be good not to clash.
- wireless networks
there was good interest in moving the idea of a wireless mesh in
wanganui forwards
- linux user group
supporting each other with linux, helping ppl install and switch
- recycling old hardware
this could tie in with the environment centre. Also there is eday coming
up on october 4th.. more on that soon..
Then we looked at some of the open-mesh gear, got and talked about the
idea for how to go about wireless network in wanganui. here's a rough
outline.
1. do some simple point to point links
2. do a small test mesh (possibly at the quaker settlement)
3. try a few streets in town
4. do some rural point to point links to connect groups of people who
are out of dsl radius
5. connect up with the fiber loop if it happens
6. contact aotearoa peoples network (who do the library free access)
we also discussed backhaul options and reasons for building a wireless
net in wanganui.
main reasons for doing it were -
1. to reduce the costs of broadband access to a point where everyone
could afford it
2. create a local community network
3. connect up areas that are currently unserved outside of the town.
That's it :) pitch in if I missed anything.
looking forward to the next meet -
* how does the first week in october sound?
cheers
/julian
