Hi there,
thanks for the offers of help this week. In the end adrian and I got
one end of the link up on wednesday, but ran out of time, for the
other end.
We used the rootena waterproof case/antenna boxes that I had down at
the green bench the other day which have built in 14db patch antennas.
We mounted one of the mesh boxes inside and connected it to the
antenna with a rp sma to sma pigtail, so the rf cable is kept to just
a few centimeters inside the case, and no external connectors to worry
about which is another plus.
We snipped the ethernet cable and used the 2 unused pairs as + & - for
dc power over ethernet.

We snipped the dc power plug off the transformer and connected it to
the ethernet pairs.
Then we closed up the case and mounted a satellite dish mounting
bracket on the site, and ran a cat 5 cable back to my router ( a
microtik 532)
Next to the router we plugged in the open-mesh transformer, and
plugged it into a POE injector, so DC ran down the ethenet cable.
Switched it on, the open-mesh box, came on, picked up a dhcp lease
from the router and checked itself in with the open-mesh web
site. yay!

The network name is wha.net.nz
Now I have unplugged it as I have to run the cables properly through
the walls (not through the bedroom window!).
Adrian is playing with a couple of boxes at his place and has been
looking at the orangemesh as a replacement backend.

Mike, I like the sound of those dishes, let's try em!
You can just stick a dipole at the focus, but mauch better to make a
couple of feed antennas, maybe a biquad would be good?

A good reference for all aspects of wireless networking is this
book. http://wndw.net (free download 5.1mb) I've got a printed copy if
anyone wants to borrow it.
I'd like to try and get the other end of the link done in the next
couple of days so will let you know when if anyone wants to see how to
do the other end.
cheers
/julian
